2015 Six Nations Rugby Predictions

The 2015 Six Nations tournament is being hailed by many as the warm-up event to the world cup that will be staged later in the same year, however, once the first match between Wales and England in Cardiff is underway, all thoughts of the world cup will be put to one side as Ireland aim to retain their championship.

Ireland – 2014 Six Nations Champions

In 2014, the Six Nations went down to the final weekend of the competition, with three teams still in with a chance of winning and many will be hoping for a similarly competitive tournament this time around.

England are being touted as many people’s favourites for the Six Nations in 2015, having come close in 2014 and are also favourites to win it with the bookmakers.  However, defeats to South Africa and New Zealand in the autumn internationals shows that Stuart Lancaster’s teams still have much to prove.  Having said that, England can expect to see the return of a number of Lions players to their squad and lightening quick winger Jonny May will be one to watch.

Defending champions Ireland had a strong autumn series and will certainly fancy their chances of winning back-to-back Six Nations for the first time since 1949.  Captain Paul O’Connell, praised by coach Joe Schmidt as the man responsible for leading Ireland to their recent win over Australia will be key if the Irish are to be successful in 2015.  The away match to Wales could be the difference between overall success and failure for Ireland and Wales themselves will be looking towards their fixture list with fond memories.

Nick Kennedy, Gonzalo GarciaWith the same fixture list in 2015 as they had when winning the Six Nations in 2013, Wales will feel confident they can deliver a repeat performance.  With winnable away fixtures in Italy and Scotland and a good recent record in France, it could be Wales’ home fixtures against England and Ireland that decide their fate.  Welsh fans will be hoping that centre Jamie Roberts, an ever present in the autumn internationals, can remain fit and help lead Wales to glory in the 2015 Six Nations.

France have not won the Six Nations since 2010 and remain a very inconsistent team.  With tough fixtures away to Ireland and England to look forward to in 2015 plus the visit of Wales, it’s difficult to imagine the French at the top of the table come the 21st of March.  Teddy Thomas is one of the bright lights of French rugby at present, scoring a stunning try against Australia, plus a hat-trick against Fiji during the autumn internationals.

It’s difficult to see Scotland or Italy challenging at the top of the Six Nations table in 2015.  The teams meet in Edinburgh on the 28th of February and this match is likely to be the wooden spoon decider.  England and Ireland are the two teams being widely talked about as possible champions but Wales will not be far behind them.
