Six Nations Rugby 2017 Predictions

The 2017 Six Nations will be the 18th time the tournament has been played in the current format and is set to be one of the most exciting for many years.  England come in as defending champions, having taken both the Championship and the Grand Slam last year and Eddie Jones’ men are very much the team to beat.

Change to the rules for the 2017 Six Nations

Interestingly, there will be a change to the rules for the 2017 Six Nations as the bonus point system, used in many other rugby tournaments around the world, has been introduced.  Any team scoring four or more tries during a match will receive an extra point, as will any team who loses a match by 7 points or less.  Three bonus points will also be awarded to the team who wins all five of their matches, thus ensuring they win the Six Nations Championship.

England must come into the 2017 Six Nations as favourites

England enjoyed a perfect 2016 and must come into the 2017 Six Nations as favourites.  England are very strong and have a group of world class players, who are operating at their peak and even when missing players through injury, can still field a good team.  In truth, the only team who could really trouble them at present are the All Blacks but alas they are not involved and this should see England win the 2017 Six Nations comfortably.  The difficult fixtures for England are in Wales and Ireland but they will both be challenges to look forward to for Eddie Jones’ team, rather than games they will be nervous about playing.

The battle for second place is between Ireland and Wales.  The Irish have a good kicker and a strong looking back line, which should be enough to defeat three of the five teams in the tournament.  The victory over New Zealand in Chicago will give Ireland the belief they can win the 2017 Six Nations but England, over the course of the tournament, should prove to be too strong.  This will leave the match with the Welsh as being the decisive one in terms of who finishes second and much could depend on the availability of Wales’ Leigh Halfpenny.

The reliable kicking of Halfpenny is crucial to Wales and with him in the team, they should be able to defeat France, Scotland and Italy.  The Welsh are also capable of giving Ireland a run for their money, especially in Cardiff but with Robert Howley deputising for Warren Gatland, who is concentrating on the British and Irish Lions, they looked a little short in the Autumn internationals.

Scotland are a team capable of beating everyone

Scotland are a team capable of beating everyone other than England in the 2017 Six Nations but they never seem to quite get over the line and this could prove to be a psychological problem.  However, they have more than enough to stay clear of bottom place, a position which will be contested by France and Italy.

With the new bonus points in place, France will probably pick up a couple of additional points, even in defeat, whereas Italy may miss out on these and that could prove crucial.  France have arguably one of their worst teams for a long time but Italy, despite promising to improve the longer they were a part of the Six Nations, have failed to deliver.  Unfortunately for the Italians, another wooden spoon is in the offing this year.
